Based on a recommendation by an acquaintance, when she was enrolled in Central Washington University she began to attend the mixed martial art club. Her first professional match was when she took on Elizabeth Posener (a Muay Thai expert) when she was just 20 years old. After that, she debuted as a pro in the one-night HOOKnSHOOT Women's Grand Prix. In two years she became the FCF Women's Bantamweight Champion the very first time. Tate's fight style was centered around wrestling as well as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It earned her much admiration and praise. Then, her fame rose when she became first woman to be awarded the Strikeforce Women's Bantamweight Championship.
